I feel great after attending Backstage’s ActorFest today in Los Angeles. I tried to find a way to express my gratitude for the people that are largely overlooked when time for praise comes in the process of creating Hollywood make-believe moving pictures.
Oh the Actors You’ll See!
An ode to the Casting Director
Come on! Come on!
There’s so much to do.
We’re making a movie
Let’s cast a star or two!
Well that part is breezy
And easy to do
Stars will act in anything,
Look at Expendables 2!
But now the due process must
briskly begin,
We’ll need a few no names
From the “unknown” bin.
But where do we find the next Not Yet Known?
Should we call the D-list and
throw them a bone?
How do we search through
the newbies and has-beens?
Who do you ask when you need
dead bodies in cabins?
You could call the film wizard
Way up in the sky
or the wallowing waitress serving you pie.
You could ask politicians
but they’ll probably lie.
There’s only one person
That’s up to the task
Of seeing all actors
And casting that mask.
They’ve seen gaaaawd awful acting
And wasted more time
Than it will take your kind eyes to finish this rhyme.
These people have patience
They need it to be sure
You don’t know who you’ll get
From that breakdown lure.
When you need to find talent
When you must have your vision
Whether it’s Shakespeare or Mamet or
reality television
The angel you seek
The one that will help you,
is a Casting Director!
And I advise you say, “Thank you.”
