Fanuary – Day 31

Okay people. I know it’s been as long a month as they come and it still seems like it whisked by before you could blink, but that’s a wrap on month one of 2012. I hope you’re off to a great start and even if it’s been slow going take comfort in knowing that this, the USA, is the land of opportunity, miracles, and second chances.  America is a fan of your efforts.  You can mulligan January and start fresh in February. You know why? Because this is the United States of America and every day we wake up here it’s the luckiest day of our lives. I don’t have to tell you. You know. America, F*** Yeah!

With the end of the month nearing, leaving only a couple opportunities to identify and explore fanaticism, I’ve got to give a big shout out to NOW.
Right now.
Here and now.
Now is where it’s at.
Now is the only thing we know for certain because it’s happening right now.
Remember all of those resolutions you made nearly a month ago? Well now is the time to reflect on how far you’ve progressed.
Now is the time to start.
Now is the time to quit.
Now is the time to get on with it.
Now is the time to get over it.
Now is the time for a hug.
Now is the time for spontaneous.
Now is robust.
Do your taxes now.
You’re manifesting your now for nows of yore.
It may not seem like it now, but it will be best in the long run.
Right now is when you realized you had more energy.
Now is the time for peace.
Now is the best time because we have all of the wisdom and experience of our human forefathers at our digital fingertips.
Now the bar has been set for future generations.
Now would be a good time for a dog walk.
Now get back to work before your boss catches you.
Now is the time for peace. (in case you missed it the last opportunity)
I’m glad we had this moment together. Not many nows will be as special as this one we shared.
Incidentally, I farted just now.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Yes. All the difference. Thanks. You could have warned your fans about the poison oak. Just sayin.

Hard to believe it’s been 26 years today but it is. I was in school when I heard. In 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded during its ascent from Cape Canaveral, killing all seven crew members including flight commander Francis R. “Dick” Scobee; pilot Michael J. Smith; Ronald E. McNair; Ellison S. Onizuka; Judith A. Resnik; Gregory B. Jarvis; and schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe; and in the process dashed the Jedi dreams of at least one junior high school student I know. Space travel is not like the movies. It is a miraculous accomplishment. We are your eternal fans, Challenger Crew, for your bravery and sacrifice in mankind’s exploration of the undiscovered country.

Happy birthday Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart! I know you have scores of fans for your timeless classical music arrangements, present company included, but let’s be honest, you were ultimately born for two reasons. One, so Tom Hulce and F. Murray Abraham could rock your story in one of the most honored films in Academy Awards history, Amadeus. And two, so Falco could immortalize your life’s story and himself in one heck of a catchy tune, “Rock Me Amadeus.” Boom. That’s three things for you people to be fans of today. The hat trick of fan appreciation. Add in our mutual fanaticism for each other and we have a serious Fandemic on our hands.

Fanuary – Day 26

Compound interest always makes fans by creating more. For some it’s more retirement financial stability and for others it’s more credit card debt to keep their credit report active. There isn’t a time of day it stops working on its objective. It accumulates by attraction and when left alone for long periods of time is capable of dramatic transformations. While the chart below reflects an example of what happens when $10,000 is the investment, it’s also a reflection of hours wasted playing anything online that ends in Ville.

Okay! Wow! How’s this for a bit of a timeline brain jolt for you technology fans? Less than a century ago, ninety-seven years to be exact, on the 25th day of January in the glorious year of 1915 the first transcontinental telephone call was successfully completed with Thomas Augustus Watson at 333 Grant Avenue in San Francisco receiving a call from Alexander Graham Bell at 15 Dey Street in New York City. THE FIRST COAST TO COAST PHONE CALL! Today, we have instantaneous audible and visual contact with people around the globe, although the conversations are still similar to that historic first call.
Here’s the conversation:
Watson: Hello?
Bell: Can you hear me now?

A courageous leader and one of the all time great Britons, Sir Winston Churchill, passed away on this day in 1965. This being a month of expressing fanaticism I thought it important to understand what it means to be a fanatic from someone with a great many fans…

A fanatic is one who can’t change his mind and won’t change the subject. ~ W. Churchill

I hope your subject is me.

Happy Chinese New Year! It is the year of the Dragon. I’m a fan of cosmic luck, prosperity, and good fortune from all dragons from Beijing to Passamaquoddy!

Thank goodness for the delicious comfort of In-N-Out burger. You are recession and heartbreak conscious. I, and millions of fellow double-double-animal-style fans, will probably file a class action suit against you in 30 years for your addictive flavor. However, for now you are keen and I’m glad to know you’re there through the thick and thin of life.
