February Passionary – Day 9

Some people who are passionate about what they do and where they’re going get a plaque when their life ends commemorating their dedication to their passion and contribution to society. If for nothing else among his accomplishments, Bill Veeck, whose Baseball Hall of Fame plaque is pictured, would have been so honored simply for owning the Chicago White Sox on July 12, 1979. That is the night of the infamous Disco Demolition Night promotional fiasco that attracted some 90,000 people to the 52,000 seat stadium with the intent to detonate their disco album collection. Suppose this is a cautionary tale about what happens when passion is misdirected in public places. And that you should keep your work out mix with Donna Summer and the Bee Gees to yourself around the ballpark.

It would be improbable for every musician and composer to have the same magical career or leave the same legacy as John Williams even if they followed their passion through the exact schooling and work path he’s conducted. But I encourage you all to try. His film and television scores could serve as the audible ambassador of the human emotion. His musical arrangements seamlessly evoke suspense, adventure, drama, joy… and that’s just while listening as I make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Let’s be honest. The embargo on Cuba initiated over 50 years ago has only slowed cigar aficionados from pursuing their passion for authentic hand rolled tobacco magic. Sadly, the official cuban cigar smoking flower hat hasn’t enjoyed the same success or popularity in seedy back humidor dealings.

Ever wonder how much passion can fit in a set of cheeks? No, not those cheeks! I mean those beautiful contorting bulbous masses on each side of your face. The ones that lift when you smile or pucker when blowing a kiss. The cute ones with the dimples that are blushing right now. Well if there was ever a way to measure the passionacity of the human FACIAL cheeks the bar would probably be set by Dizzy Gillespie. Those cheeks have room for passion, smiles, and the finest air to trump a trumpet you ever did hear.

Super Bowl Sunday carries a wave of collective passion unmatched by any event outside of a Justin Bieber concert. Sure there are more global fans of Futbol, that’s “Soccer” for my American fans, but nobody ever stops what they are doing just to watch the commercials during The World Cup. Everything about the Super Bowl is big. The drama. The fanaticism. The food spread. And of course, the heart burn. I think the real winners every year are antacid companies.

How do you measure the passion of a moment? How can one woman wake up to her normal daily routine and go to sleep that night having entrenched herself in American history as the “first lady of civil rights?” The next time you think your actions don’t matter or that standing for something is a waste of time remember a woman by the name of Rosa Parks. She’s the courageous lady that made history in 1955 by creating equal rights for citizens riding the bus when she refused to switch seats after the bus driver tried to enforce racial segregation rules. Can you believe that?! Less than 60 years ago people still rode the bus!!

It’s as if passion for the American life became a tangible commodity to the world when a Norman Rockwell painting depicted the glimpses we’re fortunate he witnessed. I wonder if the above encounter could be captured so vividly if they were sitting down staring at their cell phones.

For those who live passionately in a month defined by passion. February is the month for lovers as celebrated on Valentine’s Day. February is black history month. February is a month to celebrate passionate leaders. February is the month to rekindle your passion. Passion fuels your soul. Or is it that your soul fuels your passion? Either way, today we celebrate the passion of a man who put it together and paved the way for numerous musicians and vocal artists to showcase their passion as he lived his. A true passionary, Don Cornelius. A visionary with passion who brought America and the world, Soul Train, a time capsule of funk, groove, and everything good in between. We’re sad to see you go but we’re grateful for the time we had …and as always, we wish you love, peace, and soul!
